Somber Moment on House Floor Turns Sour

A memorial service was held today for Duncan and Jack Connolly of LeRoy, who were found dead in the back of their father's car earlier this week in rural Putnam County. Authorities say their father, Michael Connolly, hanged himself 60 feet away, leading them to proclaim a double homicide and a suicide. That pain spilled over to
the Capitol as the murders became a topic of debate in the Illinois House.
State Rep. Dan Brady (R-Bloomington) asked lawmakers to observe a moment of silence this morning to remember the lives of the two boys. But the solemn moment quickly turned bitter as some lawmakers turned the moment to a personal debate. State Rep. Bob Biggins (R-Elmhurst) wanted to know why the judge made the decision to allow the boys' father unsupervised visits, despite his history of mental problems.
State Rep. John Fritchey saw Biggins' question as an accusation that the judge is directly responsible for the boys' deaths. While Fritchey says he's willing to look into the case and might advocate revising the laws to prevent such an incident from happening again, he thinks it's reckless and irresponsible to directly blame the judge for the boys' deaths.

I want to share with you a letter written to Senator, Kristen Gillibrand:
Dear SENATOR Gillibrand:
I am proud to call you my Senator.
I am writing to you to make you aware of action that is being taken to promote initiation of a new law.
Duncan and Jacks Law has been proposed by Myra Spearman, Founder of The Weaker Vessel. She has approached Illinois State Rep. Bob Pritchard with this. Many others have reached out to him, to initiate this very necessary law which is designed to protect children in the event of violent or threatening non-custodial parents.
Nine year old Duncan and his seven year old brother, Jack, were both abducted by their non-custodial father, Michael. He had a history of MANY (57 is what is reported) violations of Orders of protection; mental instability, domestic and family violence and threats, etc. When he abducted the children, the local law enforcement did not take seriously Michaels history, in their lackadaisical approach. There were a series of serious errors in judgement. Beginning with the (acknowledged) delay in posting an Amber Alert. The Amber Alert remained only a few days. The "Search" by authorities was minimal at best.
Please, Senator, help me to make sure this law goes through. The loss of these precious babies was so uncalled for. And I KNOW it could have been prevented, had local law enforcement heeded Michael's history.
In conjunction with this, there is another initiated law that has been brought to the floor by Congressman Gary Miller, pertaining to non-custodial issues.
Please, give support to both of these attempts.
Our children need you to stand up and change the laws that are NOT working to protect them.
