Unidentified White Male

Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 25, 1957
The child was severely beaten and bruised.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vital Statistics

Estimated age: 4-6 years old
Approximate Height and Weight: 40 1/2 inches; 30 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: He had blue eyes and pale skin. His hair was medium to light brown, or blond in color, and was trimmed in an odd, bowl-shaped haircut. There were seven scars on the body, three of which could have resulted from surgical procedures. Two of these "surgical" scars were on the chest and groin. They had healed quite well, leaving only a hairline trace. There was also a scar on the boy's left ankle, which looked like a "cut-down" incision. Such an incision is made to expose a vein so that a needle may be inserted to give an infusion or transfusion. There was a 1 1/2 - inch scar on the left side of the chest, and a round, irregular scar on the left elbow. On the chin was an L-shaped scar - a quarter of an inch long in each direction. There was no vaccination scar. The boy had been circumcised. He had several small moles on his body, including three on the left side of his face; one below his right ear; three on his chest; and one on his right arm, two inches above his wrist.
Dentals: The boy had a full set of baby teeth, and was also slightly bucktoothed.
Clothing: A tan child's scarf and a boy's yellow flannel shirt were also recovered at the scene. Investigators determined that the size four shirt matched the child's size at the time of his homicide. A child's pair of black shoes were also located; however, they did not fit the unidentified boy. An Ivy League style cap made of blue corduroy was also found near the box; the hat had a leather strap and buckle across the back. It was determined that the cap was made in a south Philadelphia shop; the store owner recalled that a man between the ages of 26 - 30 made the purchase. He did not speak with an accent. The purchaser was never identified.
DNA: Mitochondrial Available

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Case History
The boy, referred to as "America's Unknown Child" or "The Boy In The Box," has never been identified.
The child's unclothed body was placed inside a cardboard box and deposited at a garbage-filled locale on Susquehanna Road in Philadelphia in February 1957. His body was beaten, although coroners' investigations were unable to pinpoint any previous broken bones or inflicted trauma. The child's nails were recently trimmed. The palm of his right hand and the soles of his feet were rough and wrinkled, indicating that the limbs had been submerged in water prior or shortly after his death. Strands of the child's own hair were present on his body, leading authorities to believe that his hair had been cut shortly before or following his homicide.
The boy was wrapped in a large piece of an inexpensive, well-worn blanket with a faded design of diamonds and blocks in green, rust-colored red, brown and white. An additional piece of the blanket was found inside the box, which was smeared with automotive grease. The third piece of the blanket remains missing.
The box which contained the child's body was from JC Penney's in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania and had been used for a white bassinet. Records were unable to pinpoint the purchaser of the item.

The box that the victim was found in.

This case has been reopened and closed many times in over 40 years. The boy's remains were exhumed in the late 90's for DNA testing; he was then re-interred into a tomb marked "America's Unknown Child" in Philadelphia.
A long strand of brown hair -- identified as being from someone else, not the child -- was removed from the scene. In addition, a man's handkerchief with the initial "G" was located near the box. Short stands of hair were present on the material and were tested to determine if the hair came from the unidentified boy; the results of the tests are unknown.
A forensic artist created an image which may possibly reflect what the boy's father may have looked like, as seen below:

Case History
The victim was located in the Kenne Creek Reservoir, along Highway 66 in the mountains east of Ashland. A man fishing in the area hooked what he thought was a blanket roll. But the bundle, a blanket and quilt wrapped with wire, contained a boy's body.
An autopsy performed the day after the body was found estimated that his death likely happened after October 1962. Winter's freezing temperatures could have helped preserve the body, but the medical examiner couldn't be sure. The condition of the body prevented him from determining a cause of death.
The child's footprints were taken with the help of the FBI, and deputies spent days with magnifying glasses comparing them with imprints taken of newborns at local hospitals around the time they estimated he had been born.
The body was wrapped in an aqua blanket and a handmade patchwork quilt that included lots of red, including red gingham squares. Two iron assayer's molds were wrapped in the quilt, apparently to weigh the body down. Thin brass wire and several loops of copper wire with a lead sheath and rubber insulation secured the bundle.
Reports indicated that both the molds, designed for refining and casting metal, and the telephone wire were once common, but already old and seldom used by the time the boy was found.

Unidentified Black Female Child
•Discovered in the Millwood area of Ware County, Georgia on December 21, 1988
•Cause of death is unknown. Death occurred 1-2 months before discovery.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vital Statistics

•Estimated age: 3 years old
•Approximate Height and Weight: 2'8-3'1"; 23-27 pounds.
•Distinguishing Characteristics: Curly black hair and brown eyes.
•Dentals: There were slight gaps between her baby teeth.
•Clothing: The victim was wearing white pajama pants, a diaper and and a white, knit pullover shirt with a red pony emblem in the upper left chest area. She had brightly colored bows in her hair.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Case History
The victim's body was wrapped in a brown baby blanket. The body was placed in a gym bag, then a cement-filled metal suitcase. The suitcase was wrapped with silver duct tape, encased in a plastic sheet and hidden inside the television console nailed shut with plywood and placed at an isolated Ware County garbage dump.
The child had been dead one to two months prior to discovery. An autopsy was inconclusive because of the decomposition of her body. Investigators also don't know if she might have been alive when sealed inside the suitcase.
A logging truck driver who stepped into the woods to relieve himself discovered the girl's body when he became curious about an old television console laying nearby. The console broke open when he kicked it over - revealing a black metal suitcase hidden inside.

Unidentified White/Hispanic Female
"Baby Hope"
•Located on July 23, 1991 in New York City, New York

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vital Statistics

•Estimated age: 3 - 5 years old
•Approximate Height and Weight: 3'2"; 30 lbs.
•Distinguishing Characteristics: Long wavy black hair, which was worn in a ponytail held by a yellow plastic ponytail holder. Eye color could not be determined. She had fair skin and may have been of Hispanic descent. Examination by x-rays revealed she had no history of broken bones. She was malnourished.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Case History
The child was located in a park bordering the southbound lane of the Henry Hudson Parkway, near the Dyckman Street exit just north of the George Washington Bridge in the upper Manhattan area.
She was wrapped in a black plastic garbage bag and stuffed in a blue 30-quart Igloo ice cooler. Police believe she would have possibly been dumped no earlier then July 18th with 10 days added as an error margin.
She had been asphyxiated and there was evidence of sexual abuse.
The cooler was located in a patch of woods on an embankment sloping down at a 45-degree angle from the highway to the Hudson River.
The child was in a crouched position with her head resting on her knees. There were no signs of bruises or wounds. She was bound with a medium-weight ligature which was half rope and half venetian-blind cord. She was placed into the cooler just shortly after death.
Inside the container was full unopened coke cans and liquid believed to have been melted ice.
A witness told police that while passing in a car on the Henry Hudson Parkway, she observed a well-dressed couple carrying a picnic cooler nine days before the body was found.
Police believe they may be looking for a male/female relationship of either a girlfriend/boyfriend, husband/wife.
In October of that year a batch of pornographic Polaroids of a girl with similar description were found on Route 46 in northern New Jersey, not far from the George Washington Bridge.
Info in this case of a couple wanted for questioning were as follows:

•Male, approximately 5'6", light brown complexion. Guessed to be Mexican or South American. Dark hair, at time age was in 40's, wore a light brown sports jacket.
•Female, approximately 5'6", light brown complexion. Guessed to be Mexican or South American. Shoulder-length dark hair, grey dress, high heels.
