Amber Alert called off, but search goes on for missing toddler, father

Posted on Sat, Mar. 07, 2009 10:22 AM

Kansas City police have canceled the Amber Alert for 3-year-old Allison Corrales, although the young girl and her father remain missing.

Authorities will continue searching for the pair, police Capt. Rich Lockhart said, but the incident is no longer classified as an Amber Alert. The urgent alerts lose effectiveness if kept in place more than 24 hours, he said.

Police issued the alert Friday morning after Allison’s mother, Katia Lainez, was found dead in her apartment at 4023 Harvard Circle in Kansas City.

Allison and the family’s car — a red 1999 Kia Sportage with Missouri license plate PB1 R3R — were missing.

Allison’s father, Luis F. Corrales, 31, is being sought as a person of interest in the homicide and disappearance. A judge granted Lainez an order of protection against him late last year, after Corrales allegedly threatened her when she told him she was ending their relationship.

Anyone with information is asked to call the TIPS Hotline, 816-474-TIPS (474-8477).

Where is Allyson Corrales?

It's been nearly two weeks since Corrales, 4, disappeared from her home in east Kansas City. Her mother, 27-year-old Katia Lainez, was found dead inside their apartment. And Allyson's dad, Luis, is a person of interest in her disappearance and her mom's murder. There was an Amber Alert immediately after the disappearance, but since then, there haven't been any developments, at least that police are making known.

Police say it's possible that Luis Corrales might be headed to Manassas, Virginia or Houston, Texas, but a Google News search shows nothing from those areas. KC police released a series of more recent photos of Allyson, including the one above, on Friday, when Katia was buried.

According to the FBI, Luis is an illegal immigrant who'd previously lived in San Antonio. Katia had a full protection order against him. They think he might be in a red 1999 Kia Sportage with MO license plates reading PB1R3R.

Here's a downloadable poster for the case, courtesy of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, which includes detailed descriptions of Allyson and Luis. America's Most Wanted has also added the case to its Web site.

Amber Alert Lifted For Missing KC Girl
Police Seek Father As Person Of Interest In Homicide

POSTED: 10:57 am CST March 6, 2009
UPDATED: 10:21 pm CST March 7, 2009

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Authorities have canceled an Amber Alert for a missing 4-year-old girl whose mother was found slain in their apartment on Friday morning.

Investigators will continue to search for Allyson Corrales and her biological father, Luis F. Corrales, 31, according to a news release from the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department.

The alert was lifted after 24 hours, but it does not affect the ongoing investigation, said Kansas City police Capt. Rich Lockhart.

Police described Luis Corrales as a person of interest in the "homicide/abduction investigation," according to the news release.

Corrales may have relatives in Houston and Manassa, Va., according to the news release.

He had been working in San Antonio but came back to Kansas City to visit his daughter on Sunday, police said.

Though police hadn't yet released the identity of Allyson Corrales' mother, her family said she was Katia Lainez, 27.

Lainez' brother-in-law, Orlando Melgar, went to her apartment in the 4000 block of Harvard Circle on Friday morning to check on her because her sister, Lelis Melgar, hadn't heard from her since Wednesday night.

The apartment management let him into her unit, and he found her dead inside.

Orlando Melgar didn't see any obvious wounds on her body, he said.

"I didn't see blood or anything too," Orlando Melgar said. "I don't know how. I don't know how."

Lelis Melgar said she was feeling pain for her sister but also was worried about her niece. In Spanish, she urged anyone who saw her to call 911.

Lainez had a restraining order against Luis Corrales and she had sole custody of Allyson Corrales, according to investigators. Lainez's family said Lainez feared Luis Corrales and that he was a very jealous person.

If you have information about where to find Allyson Corrales or her father, please call the Crime Stoppers TIPS Hot Line at 816-474-TIPS (8477), text TIP452 plus a message to CRIMES (274637) or submit a tip online at kccrimestoppers.com.

Slain Woman's Car Found In San Antonio
Allison Corrales Still Missing; Police Seek Girl's Father
POSTED: 3:45 pm CDT April 1, 2009
UPDATED: 6:04 pm CDT April 1, 2009

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A car belonging to a slain Kansas City woman has been found in San Antonio, police said. The woman's 4-year-old daughter is still missing.

An Amber Alert was issued for Allison Corrales on March 6 after Kansas City police found her mother, 27-year-old Katia Lainez, dead inside an east-side apartment.

Police said the girl's father, 31-year-old Luis Corrales, is a person of interest in the case. Investigators said he was the last person seen with Lainez.

During a news conference Wednesday morning, San Antonio police and Kansas City detectives said Lainez's red KIA Sportage had been found wrecked Sunday on the south side of San Antonio. The missing child and father were not located.

A witness told police that Luis Corrales and his daughter were spotted getting on a bus to Mexico.

However, investigators said they have reason to believe the pair returned to the United States.

Police said Luis Corrales has relatives in San Antonio and Houston. Investigators said they believe he may be headed to Mexico City, El Salvador, or Honduras.

Anyone with information about Luis or Allison Corrales can call 911 or the Crime Stoppers TIPS hot line at 816-474-TIPS.

Missing child, dad may be in S.A. area

Express-News - Authorities are asking the public to help find a missing 4-year-old girl, whose mother was found stabbed to death in Kansas City recently.

Police believe the girl, Allyson Corrales, may be in San Antonio with her father, Luis Corrales.

The pair hasn’t been seen since Allyson’s mother, Katia Lainez, was found dead March 6, according to Kansas City detective Michael Jones.

Kansas City authorities found the father’s vehicle at Lainez’s apartment after the slaying, but the victim’s red truck was missing. It wasn’t until Sunday that local authorities found the truck after it was involved in an accident at South New Braunfels and Pecan Valley.

Corrales, 31, who has been described as a person of interest in Lainez’s death, has family in San Antonio and has visited them several times in the past few months, Jones said.

Anyone with information on the girl’s whereabouts is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (210) 224-STOP.
